10 Things You Need to Know; Quotes About Life
80Remind Me
Every once in a while, I need a boost of motivation and inspiration, but also a reminder that I am but a human. We all have troubling times, illnesses, financial issues, internal struggles, and worries. (Naturally so, as we are emotional beings.)
However, if only for the few moments that it takes for you to read this, remember that you have a place in this world, and that that place is an important, intricate part of humanity and history. You are invaluable and unique. You are the best and only version of yourself.
I sometimes need reminding that I am human. Quotes, books, and sticky notes help. Here, I have compiled a list of "10 Thing You Need to Know" mainly for myself... Things that I need help remembering from time to time.
Look in the mirror, take a deep breathe, let it out, and smile. You, my friend, are alive.

10 Things You Need to Know
- You have a name. A unique name that someone felt you worthy of; wanted to share with and/or pass down to you. You have a name that has an amazing history. Embrace it, live up to it... own it.
- "Today is the first day of the rest of your life" (a philosophy of the drug rehab group Synanon). You are privileged in that you awoke at some point today. Today is what you make of it; a new day; all yours.
- "Today starts now" (one of my own). Your day does not have to start at 12:01 am, when you wake up, when you really wake up, or when you get to the office. You can start your day over at any time. Ate something not within the realm of your diet? Start over. Said something negative to your spouse? Start over. Were you sluggish and unmotivated this morning? Start over.
- "You are the captain of your ship; the master of your sea." A soccer coach of mine told the team that over and over again during one particular season, and it has stuck. You decide what you do on a moment-to-moment basis. Most importantly - what you make of yourself and your life. You can not always account for storms, high tides, and holes in the sails, but you are the only one that has control of the ship's wheel, and in what direction it is steered.
- "This is your life. Are you who you want to be?" (from "This is Your Life" by Switchfoot) Along the same lines as the last two things that you need to know, remembering that this is your life is vital to reducing stress and anxiety, and maintaining control. Are you who you want to be? Self-discovery can be a very interesting, exhilarating, and refreshing journey. Start today... start now. If you are perfectly satisfied with who you are, I applaud you. Give yourself a hug, and keep track of what it is that you are doing that you love, and foster it. If not, explore why and what to do about it.
- You are only human. There is not a person alive today that is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Its what you do with the mistakes that defines you. Stay calm. Learn. Evaluate. Research. Fix. Making mistakes can be a humbling experience, but should never deter you from reaching your goals. When you fell off of your bike, did you get back up? When you failed (that one and only time, right?) that test, did you continue learning? Think back at past mistakes. You got through it. Why stress now?
- We are what we do. Another version of this is "We are what we repeatedly do." (Aristotle) Stealing makes you a thief, teaching makes you a teacher, etc. Habits are hard to break, but what if it is changing you for the worse? What if others define you by your habits? Think of what you repeatedly do (habits, hobbies, sayings, attitudes, rituals, work, etc). What does it say about you? How does it make you feel? Remember, actions speak louder than words.
- Honesty starts within. Be honest with yourself... about everything. Get back to the basics of your own, personal temple. As you continue to be honest with and about yourself, you will more easily be honest with and about others. Are you the first to cast a stone?
- You are not going to wake up tomorrow 20 pounds less. I know, I know. This one is a bit rough to to accept. Negative things seem to happen quickly; positive, not so much. Work towards your goals. Understand that some things take time and effort, but it will be worth it. Bill Gates did not open his door one day to find a fully-built computer and business empire on his doorstep. Or did he...
- Gravity is not going anywhere. Hmm... What I mean is that aging is a part of life. I cannot sugar coat it, you will (if not already) most likely develop a few wrinkles, probably start wearing an overly powdery perfume or musky cologne, and may need the diapers you started out with (but a bit bigger, of course). Are your parents and grandparents absolutely deprived? Are they horribly depressed? Exactly. They're still living life. In fact, they're living differently than they did years ago. There are different stages of life; different and new opportunities and experiences. I see myself fully embracing age. I will gladly go for an all-over whitish-gray hair color, and tell kids stories starting with "When I was your age..." I honestly am not scared of aging. I know that if I live as fully as possible, my elder years will be full of wonderful memories and even more new and exciting things to experience.
Again, this is your life. You are alive. Today begins the rest of your life. You are the captain. You have a name to be proud of. Reaching goals is not an effortless task. Practice what you preach. Be honest with yourself. Learn from mistakes. Embrace age.
“Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle.”
Paulo Coelho, Brida

Excellent quotes!!! One of my favorites is "Be Here Now" since I had a tendency to get ADD and tackle way to many tasks at once. Voted UP!!!
Thank you for sharing all the different messages here. I convey many of them in much of my writing, yet don't quote anyone. I hold no belief in any particular philosophy that has ever existed, because I've come to understand a much simpler statement, which is a quote I created- "Life Is Easy, People Make It Complicated". I once said that to someone and they said it was extremely profound(very deep) in and of itself. Voted up! Useful, awesome and beautiful. Great hub! :)
Hey Veronica, I don't like people who attempt to sound profound and don't actually say anything that is profound. These type of people are dangerous and manipulative. I was on Facebook one day and someone on my friends list posted a quote made by someone else and when I stopped to think about it, I realized that it didn't actually say anything profound and then wrote a hub to dispel it. LOL! :) Since then, I keep doing it when people post supposedly profound statement on Facebook. I mean, it's not too difficult to see through BS. LOL! :) You're welcome. :)
I loved this hub and I am going to bookmark it for those days that I'm feeling sorry for myself. One of my most favorite quotes is Live today like there is no tomorrow.
A poet and she knows it...nice!:)
ADD could be annoying also!:)
Great tips and reminders of what we should all strive for! As my favorite writer Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of a little mind."
Since Hinduism greatly emphasizes on name, I believe in the power of our names. The Buddha said, you never reach the future, can't remain in the past, and you always live in present. So I believe in today is the first day of our life.
Thanks for sharing these motivating thoughts.
Veronica, I love your list!
I definitely need a reminder once in a while that I am but a human, and this reflective list of yours will help me a lot.
I liked how you integrated your own personal and very wise thoughts, with the more legendary quotes.
This hub is beautiful!
Great job!
Voted up, bookmarked and pushed all the right buttons.
Oh, by the way, your niece and nephew are sooo adorable!
Thanks.
Great Hub Veronica.
Now let add one of my Frogisms to the list:
"Life has a way of taking care of itself."
Something to think about when you start tinkering with it too much.
The Frog Prince
I really enjoyed this. Sometimes as time goes by, we forget that we are getting older. Things change. But life continues to be what we make of it.
I especially like where you talked about having a name and a history and how you said "Embrace it. Live up to it. Own it." What that means to me is that we all have something a value to share and to use for ourselves. I see so many people (friends) who have the knowledge to make their lives better, but they don't "own" their intelligence. They just let it slip by and would rather complain about the world.
Your Hub was extremely meaningful. Thanks for sharing. Voted up.
Hi Veronica,
I really enjoyed this - very well written. I especially liked #3 about starting over. I will say "ugh, well there is always tomorrow." But you are so right. And it is your own quote! Today starts now! Turn it around in the moment, don't wait for a brand new day. Thanks :)

Great article! I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing. Voted up.
Many great quotes here, I love them all:) Except that gravity isn't going anywhere, I must say that I have some problem with that fact! Shared and voted up!

Hi Veronica,
Since you know a little about sports, I will liken this hub to one of my favorite pastimes; baseball.
It's the world series. This is the situation: It's the bottom of the ninth, the home team is batting with 2 outs and the bases are loaded. The home team underdogs are trailing the previous year's world champions by three runs and the relief pitcher they're facing is the Cy Young award winner from the last two years and hasn't allowed an earned run since then.
The count is 3 balls and 2 strikes and the batter is Veronica Farkas. Here comes the pitch, "Life." She swings, "Ten Things You Need to Know; Quotes About Life" and there it goes, OMG, back, back, back, it's GONE; A GRAND SLAM, this game is over!!!
Like a memory with this kind of ending, your hub will stay with me and I'll refer to it in my coaching practice. It just resonates with reality!
Well done, young lady, and keep it up!
Not only voted up with all the trimmings, I also posted it on my facebook for all my friends and family to see, with your attribution, of course!
it's awesome quotos and artical keep it up..
Hi Veronica,
Thought you might like to know that because of your hub, I also learned how to share with my hub page readers. Didn't know that before. I am grateful and I hope to pay your kindness forward!
Thanks again,
Bruce
You have a beautiful collection of reminders that life is what we make of it and what we believe it to be. I particularly like "Today starts now" as sometimes I need to stop in the middle of a day and change course. Life has a way of throwing surprises right into the middle of your plans, and some days, we just need to start fresh! Voted up!
I love your hub! Always good to have a reminder of just how human we are. I tend to forget that many times a day, and it can be quite the mood killer when you try to be Superwoman and then realize you're not.
Hello Veronica, I loved this hub very interesting and uplifting stuff you've got here voted up and awesome, I think my favorite quote is "You cannot find peace by avoiding life." Virginia Woolf, so true my friend :) ge

These are great inspirational words and quotes. I especially like #4 "You are the captain of your ship; the master of your sea." So often we try to blame other people for our failures when we are the ones who have and should maintain the responsibility.
